Online renewal of driving license

Terms and conditions

  • You have a Dutch driving licence issued after 1 October 2006. 

  • You are applying for an extension of a driving licence or a category extension.

  • You are registered in the municipality of Waalre (or another municipality where online renewal is possible, see RDW).

Please note: sometimes you need a health declaration or medical examination from the CBR. For example, if you have a truck driving license or from a certain age. Request this online via ‘Mijn CBR (Inloggen)’ on cbr.nl. If this does not work online, make an appointment with the municipality.

What do you need

  • A smartphone with NFC reader (Android version 7.0 or higher, iPhone model  7 or higher).

  • The DigiD app to which you have added an ID check or login with an identity card or driving license (with PIN code). Don’t have this app yet? Then follow the simple step-by-step plan on DigiD.nl. 

How does it work

Step 1: Take a passport photo

  • Have a new passport photo taken by an RDW-approved photographer. For an overview, see the RDW location guide on rdw.nl (only available in Dutch).

  • Take your current driving license (or driving license number) to the photographer. They will send the passport photo and signature securely and digitally to the RDW. Within two hours you will receive an email from the RDW. This will state whether your application has been approved and whether you can renew your driving license online.

  • You pay the photographer for the passport photo and for the additional costs for processing the signature.

Step 2: Renew your driving license

  • Go to rdw.nl. Click on `Renewing your driving license’ and then on the link  ‘Renew driving license’. Log in with the DigiD app and pay with iDEAL.

Step 3: Collect your driving license

  • You will receive an email from the RDW two working days after your application stating that your new driving license is ready.

  • Make an appointment with the municipality to pick up your new driving license. Bring your current driving license. You must hand that in.

Good to know

  • Pick up your driving license within three months. After that, this is no longer possible. You must then submit a new application.

  • Applying for a first driving license online – for example a lost or stolen driving license – is not possible. Make an appointment at the civil affairs desk of your municipality.
